Sewing accessories for beginners
Would you like to start sewing but have no idea what you need? We've put together a summary of the sewing accessories you should definitely procure yourself.
What do I need for what?
Sewing needles
You can use sewing needles to tackle your first small projects, such as sewing the buttons onto a blouse.
Thread
At the beginning, it is normally sufficient to have black thread for dark fabrics and white thread for light-coloured fabrics. It is best to use a polyester all-purpose thread. This is stable and versatile.
Marking aids
Tailor's chalk makes it easy to transfer pattern pieces perfectly onto your fabric, as it washes out easily and leaves no unsightly marks.
Tailor's shears
Cutting is incredibly easy with a good pair of scissors! Make sure the scissors are only ever used to cut fabric, otherwise they will quickly become blunt. To cut small threads, a thread snip is an ideal tool.
Pins
Pins allow you to pin pieces of fabric together for experimenting or to fix a seam in place before you machine sew it.
Fabric clips
Fabric clips have the advantage that they don't damage the fabric and keep even thick fabrics together easily.
Hand rule
For small projects, a hand gauge can be very helpful as it is a convenient way to mark small lengths.
Tape Measure
To sew your own clothes, you must know your exact body measurements. Using a rule, you can hardly take your waist measurement properly, that's why a tape measure is essential.
Unpicker
With an unpicker, it's easy to open up a seam without pulling the thread too much.
Sewing machine needles
For your sewing machine, you will need special needles. These are available in different thicknesses and types. To start with, you should procure yourself some universal needles that you can use to sew both thick and thin fabrics.
